It's mud season! I love mud; it keeps them occupied for hours. Sure, clean up is an issue, but it's a quick season, and I love to watch the things they think up.
Merry Christmas! Here are a few highlights from this past year: Deb hosted her youngest siblings at the barn and put them to work, then gave them a chance to ride Gypsy. She is still with CCF as a Medic and enjoys her job. She has been trail riding a lot, travelling and competing with her horse Gypsy, and branched out in her costume making hobby to make a Medieval costume for a friend's horse. The biggest change in Deb's life this past year is the addition of a cat named Toby! Lewis and Kaitlynn are enjoying their home and and yard. Kaitlynn is working as a legal secretary and has made a beautiful home for them both. When not working, Kaitlynn loves to make candles and bread, including sourdough. She is enjoying building their home library with more classics than she can shelve (be still, my heart), reading, and playing piano. Lewis built two beautiful bookcases for their growing library. He works hard to keep the highway safe and has won some awards, including Trooper of the Y...
I'm losing two old friends today. Their deaths will not appear in the obituaries, nor will there be any calling hours or a funeral. There will be a hole in the ground where they once stood. No, they are not people, but dear old friends nonetheless. They are my very old Maple trees that stand guard at our rental house. It is a house where we spent the first ten years of our marriage. Lots of changes happened there, but those two trees remained unchanging. I spent many years under their branches, basking in their shade. Once I found my little boy, daddy's hatchet in hand, trying to cut down one of those trees. Another time, I discovered that same little boy, garden hose in hand, water turned up full blast, pretending to put out a tree on fire! On the corner of the lot, one of the Maples dwarfed several other smaller trees, creating a "grove." To my little children, it seemed a forest, and they would hide and wander through the trees. I would lie o...
So many times I hear of moms in co-ops and play groups sharing disturbing stories. Stories of other moms gossiping or bossing around others. Stories of kids acting out and their moms who are unwilling to call junior into account. Stories of squabbling and hurt feelings and being forced to comply with the academic rules of the co-op. Stories that just make me shake my head in wonder. Are homeschool co-ops that important that a woman would subject herself to this? Isn't keeping a home, raising children and taking care of a husband not enough stress? Aside from my feelings on co-ops mentioned in this blog , I would never put up with this kind of treatment. I would not subject myself or my kids to ridicule or gossip or the pressure some co-ops put on families. I know that many moms just feel they need the support of being around other homeschool moms. I know that some moms just don't feel they can homeschool completely on their own. And I know that not all co-ops have these...
